Michael C. McGreevy

Hey gang! I just wanted to put a quick note out here that at some point next week we’re going to start getting together in the (currently Beta) Everquest II Extended Free-To-Play version of the game. If you’re interested in joining us, you’ll need to grab the client here.

I’ll post something official later in the week when I’ve had a chance to, I don’t know, sleep and maybe eat something that wasn’t made under a heat lamp. I just thought you’d all like to get a head start on downloading the client.

Dudes. Seriously. I had the WORST dream. In this dream, I completely ceased to exist for two whole weeks. Like, I was just gone. The world just kept on spinning but it didn’t have me on it. It was, like, crazy. For reals.

What’s that you say? It wasn’t a dream? I really did disappear for two weeks?

Noooooooooooooo!

Well, at least that explains why I didn’t make my usual Monday roundup posts.

Convenient excuse done. List commences…

I don’t care if Monday IS blue! I’m here to cheer you up with the latest and greatest geek news on the block. I’m also kind of running out of kitschy pop-culture references to go along with Monday in my opening statements, so if you can help a brother out lemme know.

We’ve got some great news in the works for those of you who attend our track panels this year, but we’re not quite ready to reveal it yet. Suffice it to say, if you thought we had some great events last year you haven’t seen ANYTHING yet. In the meantime, though, get a load of the list below for some other fun things that are going on in the geek world.

It’s Monday, MMO-keteers! You know what that means!!

No, that doesn’t mean it’s Music Monday. Sheesh.

BTW…You’re awesome if you got that reference and don’t ever let anyone tell you differently.

Yet again I have combed through hundreds of RSS links to pick out the choicest fruit for you, the faithful snarky flock of the Dragon*Con MMORPG community. Behind the cut below you’ll find the best geek news that’s fit to be transmitted in digital format. Well, ok…You’ll find the stuff that looked interesting to me before I hit the point where my eyes crossed and I clicked the “Mark All As Read” link.

Off we go!

A glorious evening to you all, noble warriors in the Snark army! It is time once again for your Secretary of Geek affairs to fill you in on some of the awesome news of the last week. My apologies for the lateness of the post, but I was feeling a bit under the weather today and so, unfortunately, has Mama McGreevy. Never worry, though! I did manage to gather a few tidbits to quench your thirst for geek knowledge, and you’ll find them behind the cut.

Ahhh, Lazy Sunday. A day to rest and recharge for the week. Unless, that is, you happen to be on the Dragon*Con MMORPG track staff. If you are and your name just happens to be Michael C. McGreevy (which mine is), Sunday is a day for digging up a bunch of links about geek stuff and making a post with snarky comments about them.

Which, I suppose, isn’t all that bad in the grand scheme of things. He could have asked me to comb his back hair or something. Yeech.

Anyway, here’s your Monday Geek Roundup you lucky dogs! I tried to collect news throughout the entire week instead of just gathering stuff that popped up over the weekend this time, so you may have already caught some of this.

Official image of the Boobquake Facebook Page

Those of you who don’t spend pretty much every waking hour buried deep in the mire of social media may not be aware of it, but there is a very special and important scientific experiment going on today. A prominent Iranian cleric (I’ll bet he has a Shadow spec) claims that the reason we’re seeing so many earthquakes recently is because too many woman in modern society dress inappropriately and behave in a promiscuous manner. In response to this “enlightened” statement, self-proclaimed perverted atheist blogger Jen McCreight declared that today, Monday April 26th, would be a day in which women should dress inappropriately to see if they could cause earthquakes. With her huge tracts of land prominently on display, Jen hopes to cause what she has appropriately dubbed a Boobquake.

I’m thinking that perhaps the image I used for the geek roundup last week would have been a better match for today. Ah well.

Unfortunately nothing I have in the way of geek news from the weekend is nearly as awesome as that, but I figure I’ll do my best to catch you up on the latest anyway.

Suddenly I'm not hating Monday so much.

Happy Monday, Dragon*Con MMORPGerers! Grimmy has put me on the “Geek News” task force, and I figure that since most of you probably spent a good chunk of your weekend arse deep in raids and other such tomfoolery I’d go ahead and post a list of cool things I stumbled across this weekend that exist outside the MMORPG world.

Hey! Hey! Calm down there, sparky! I didn’t actually mean OUTSIDE. I wouldn’t expect you to face the evil day star!

  • io9 has a trailer up for a new movie coming out of Japan that’s either called Strippers5 vs. Zombies or Big Tits Zombie in 3D. I haven’t quite figured out which it is, yet, but really…does it matter? Needless to say the trailer is pretty much NSFW. [source]
  • For you Doctor Who fans out there, io9 also has some concept art out there showing some re-designed Daleks that will be appearing in the current season. [source]
  • Yeah, but do they sparkle?? Comicsalliance.com has some images up showing two versions of a new X-Men series that starts off with our favorite mutant heroes doing battle against…vampires. Yay. I mean, seriously guys. You’re not going to convince tween girls and their kinda creepy mothers to read comic books just by slapping some fangs on Wolverine. [source]
  • Hercules is reporting over at Ain’t It Cool News that LucasArts is talking about a new animated Star Wars series that will take place after the events of Return of the Jedi and feature the characters from the original trilogy. This isn’t necessarily as scary as it sounds. The Clone Wars animated series has, on the whole, been pretty damned good and in many ways is a heck of a lot better than Episodes I through III. In the right hands this could be pretty awesome. My hope is that they use Timothy Zahn’s excellent Heir to the Empire series as source material. Especially considering that it has long been considered the “third trilogy” by many in the Star Wars fan community. [source]
  • Betty White In A Metal Bikini Wielding A Flaming Chainsaw While Riding A John Ritter Centaur. ’nuff said. [source]
  • And if that wasn’t awesome enough, I leave you with a catch song about The Bacon Man. [source]

Image Courtesy of TheBuiBrothersThose of you who were fortunate to listen to Kevin and Krystalle’s first Dragon*Con MMORPG podcast a few weeks ago might have caught the fact that Felicia Day, creator and star of The Guild, was looking to attend our little corner of the geek universe this year (you might also know her from a few of her “side projects” – Dr. Horrible’s Sing-A-Long Blog and the final season of Buffy The Vampire Slayer).  Well it looks we’re one step closer to seeing Kevin’s prediction become a reality.  While she hasn’t appeared on the main page of the Dragon*Con site as of this writing, her bio is now showing up on the current guest list.

Ms. Day is a self-professed avid gamer and wrote The Guild based on her own experiences playing World of Warcraft.  If you haven’t yet, I highly recommend checking the series out.  Chances are you’ll be reminded of someone you know…maybe even yourself (the first one of you that compares me to Vork is totally getting a 50 DKP minus).

Those of you who are fans of Ms. Day should also keep an eye out on the Whedon Track site to see what they have planned for her there as well!

Our good friends over at Cryptic Studios have finally announced a release date for the eagerly anticipated Champions Online!  All of you spandex loving gamers will be be able to start fighting crime in Millennium City on July 14th!

I know there’s a lot of spandex loving Dragon*Con attendees out there who are eagerly anticipating this one (at least, if their panels last year were any indicator), and I have to admit that the recent announcement of the “swinging” travel power has me itching to put the tights on again myself.

Hey, what can I say?  I have an affinity for a certain web-slinger.

With Dragon*Con happening just over a month after the release we’re really hoping that Cryptic decides to join us again this year and give us the insider scoop to their new MMO hotness!
